Our story

Ikurangi Eco Retreat is the first purpose-built eco accommodation in the Cook Islands. The dream of husband and wife, Matt and Luana Scowcroft, Ikurangi was created to give visitors to Rarotonga the option of a holiday that doesn’t compromise the environment.

Matt originally hails from Bolton, UK and is a practising lawyer. After wandering around the world for a couple of years, he found love with Luana and with the Cook Islands. He recognised an opportunity here to develop a different kind of resort that, nestled in the hills of Matavera, has minimal impact on the environment.

Luana grew up in the hotel industry in the Cook Islands. Two generations before her ran hotels around Rarotonga. She decided to return to the Cooks in 2012 after 12 years in NZ working in various conservation and social justice roles and saw a need for a more sustainable approach to the growing tourism industry.

Together, and with the help of their families, they developed Ikurangi Eco Retreat. A unique place for visitors from all walks of life who are conscious of their effect on our fragile environment. The importance placed on minimising the retreat’s effect on the environment was the inspiration behind using luxury safari tents (or glamping tents as they are affectionately known). The use of shallow foundations for the decking, composting toilets, sustainably sourced materials, natural and biodegradable toiletries and cleaning products and free bicycles was key to developing an eco-friendly accommodation site. Just as importantly, it was imperative that the comfort and luxury expected by guests was not compromised.

Ikurangi literally means “the tail of the sky” and is the name of the mountain that watches over the village of Matavera. The dramatic mountain centre of Rarotonga is something that is often overlooked by visitors to the island, but holds its own mysterious and alluring beauty. Ikurangi Eco Retreat invites guests to Rarotonga to experience an alternative side to the island and enjoy its natural inland beauty.

We are lucky enough to have Susan with us full time. Susan is the boss in the housekeeping area and gardens.
